Forecast of coronavirus effects on the German construction industry in 2020

With two forecast scenarios, Germany’s BauInfoConsult institute shows the possible effects of the pandemic on the German construction sector. The key construction indicators – such as construction investment or volume – are linked to GDP development in the long term. On the basis of various macroeconomic forecasts and their current correction downwards, similar developments in construction can […]

With two forecast scenarios, Germany’s BauInfoConsult institute shows the possible effects of the pandemic on the German construction sector. The key construction indicators – such as construction investment or volume – are linked to GDP development in the long term. On the basis of various macroeconomic forecasts and their current correction downwards, similar developments in construction can be assumed. Only the intensity of the effects is questionable.

Assuming that the spread of coronavirus in China peaked in the first quarter of 2020 and outbreaks in other economically strong countries will also be somewhat under control by the end of the quarter, the OECD anticipates global growth to decline by 0.5%. As a result, global economic growth is expected to be 2.4% in 2020. And for Germany would be + 0.3%. In this case, the BauInfoConsult forecast model assumes that construction investment in 2020 could increase by 2.1% and construction volume by 2.2%. This would roughly result in a construction investment of € 331.2 billion and a construction volume of € 453.8 billion.

However, this mild overall scenario is becoming less likely from day to day. The focus is on the second scenario. In the event of a prolonged, more intense outbreak of the coronavirus, which continues to spread in the Asia-Pacific region, in Europe and North America, a global economic growth of only 1.5% can be expected in 2020. However, this negative variant would particularly affect Europe. If this situation arises, German GDP could slide into a slight recession with a minus of 0.3%. For construction, this would result in a minus of 0.4% in investments and in construction volume -0.5%. This would mean construction investment in 2020 will be around € 323 billion and the construction volume at around € 428 billion.

After all, the demand for construction in such a situation should decrease and also affect prices, which could return to normal levels.

What is Plywood?

Plywood is made of several 1 mm thick slides of solid wood. Each layer of plywood is usually oriented with its grain running at right angles to the adjacent layer in order to reduce the shrinkage and improve the strength of the finished piece.

History of Plywood Development

Plywood is considered the first type of industrial wood to be invented. Archaeologists found the first appearance of plywood in the tombs of Pharaon in Egypt around 3500 BC. About a thousand years ago, the Chinese knew how to make thin woods and glue them together for interior applications. The British and the ancient French also noted that they applied plywood in the 17th and 18th centuries.

In 1797, Samuel Bentham – a famous British engineer and shipwright – patented a number of thin-walled lumber machines. In his patent registration, he described a concept of gluing thin layers of wood together to form a thicker piece of wood – this is considered to be the first description of the concept of plywood. We use it today.

About 50 years later, Immanuel Nobel, the father of the famous scientist Alfred Nobel, realized that, by combining thin layers of natural wood together, it would form a material sheet with incredible durability.

In 1905, the first plywood was exhibited at the Lewis & Clark Fair in Finland.

In 1928, the first 4 feet x 8 feet (1.2m x 2.4m) plywood boards were introduced in the United States as a construction material.

Nowadays, there are many variety of plywoods that specifically designed for each purposes, such as flexible plywood (known as flexi ply, bending plywood, bendy plywood), container flooring plywood (floor boards), laminated plywood, packing plywood, construction plywood…

The structure of the plywood is divided into three components:

  1. The core (intestine): consists of many thin layers of veneers with a thickness of about 1mm.
  2. Surface part: is a layer of natural wood.
  3. Glue part: the common glue used for plywood is Urea Formaldehyde glue (UF) and Phenol Formaldehyde glue (PF). There are also E1,E2,MR,Melamine,WBP glues…

The raw materials for plywood production are usually pine, birch, fillings, acacia, eucalyptus, etc.

Manufacturing

Our Plywood manufacturing process has 8 main stages:

  1. Round timber is peeled and cut into logs with required length.
  2. Log is rotary peeled by machines to make thin veneers.
  3. Veneers are leaved to dry out and then classified by qualities.
  4. Layers of veneer are arranged by standard procedure, then glued together with specific glues (E1,E2,MR,Melamine,WBP) to meet the required thickness.
  5. Layers of glued veneer are heat-pressed to make plywoods.
  6. Plywood is went through a quality check process.
  7. Plywood is added final touches: sanding, cover films or cut into customers’ required sizes.
  8. Packing, stacking and stamping plywoods and ready to delivery to customers.

After five years of strong growth, sales in the German wood industry (incl plywood industry) fell by 1.2% last year. The sales of companies with 50 or more employees totaled € 36.1 billion in 2019.

While the number of employees increased by 0.9% to 156,995, the number of companies decreased by 0.5% to 929. With a minus of 1%, the domestic market developed better than the foreign market (-1.4%). Driven by the still robust construction industry, the construction-related area of the wood industry – which includes the manufacturers of prefabricated houses, windows, doors, stairs and other wood-based components (plywood, floorboard) – recorded the most significant increase of 3.7% last year.

“Even if the timber industry had to cope with a slight decline in sales for the first time in five years, we are overall satisfied with the annual result. The current sales development is primarily due to the negative price effect for wood and wood products. For the current year, we expect a price-adjusted stable development, ”said the managing director of the Federation of the German Wood Industry (HDH), Dr. Denny careless.

Brazil: Exports of tropical plywood and veneer in 2019

Exports volume of tropical plywood in 2019 totalled 89,120 cubic metres, an increase of over 45% compared to 2018. However, the monthly average of around 7,400 cu.m is very low compared to the past decades and minute compared to the potential of the Brazilian tropical forest.

The top 5 markets for tropical plywood in 2019 were the US, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Canada which together accounted for over 80% of all exports of these products.

It has been difficult to expand markets for tropical veneer says the Brazilian Association of Mechanically-Processed Timber Industry (ABIMCI) because of raw material supply issues. However, despite this problem there was a significant growth in export volumes in 2019, with shipment of 25,848 cubic metres, a good recovery compared to previous years.

The top 5 markets for Brazilian veneers in 2019 were South Korea, the US, Malaysia, the Philippines and China which together accounted for almost 70% of veneer exports.

Timber production in international market in 2019

According to ABIMCI production of the main timber products has been steadily expanding, driven mainly by the rising production potential of the forests and export demand.

Sawnwood, pallets, veneer sheets, plywood, wood frames, doors and other components are some of the main products produced for the domestic and export markets. Some processed products such as furniture parts/frames for the export market, especially in the US are competing directly with the same product from Chile and China.”

Representatives of ABIMCI said in 2020 the international wood products market will continue to experience some market unpredictability as the US/China trade dispute will linger on creating uncertainties and changes in the supply chain for wood products in several countries.

The consumption of wood products is gaining importance globally and there is a high expectation that as technical standards for wood frame construction are developed there will be major opportunities in the construction sector.

On the 12th of November 2019 the Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam signed and announced Circular No. 22/2019/TT-BCT on Temporary Suspension of border-gate transfer business and temporary import of plywood (HS 44.12) into Vietnam for re-export to US. This Circular takes effect from December 27, 2019 to December 31, 2024.

While export of Chinese plywood for the US is decreasing by trade conflict and Vietnam is taking over such business and export to the US is increasing but there is some concern that some Chinese outfits are exporting Chinese made farm products and industrial products as Vietnamese products and ship out to the US through Vietnam to avoid the increased duties in the US.

Since last June, the Vietnamese government tries to stop such detour trade and tightened rules and penalties on Chinese products, which are destined to the US as Vietnamese products and this new regulation is one of such restrictions.

EU imports of tropical hardwood plywood products were 174,200 MT in the first half of 2019, 8% more than the same period last year. Import value increased 14% to €154.4 million.

A large and growing proportion of the plywood faced with tropical hardwood imported into the EU is manufactured in China. The EU imported 76,100 MT of this product from China in the first half of 2019, 39% more than during the same period in 2018.

Imports also increased from Gabon, by 9% to 7,400 MT, Viet Nam, by 3% to 6,100 MT, and Brazil, by 9% to 6,000 MT. These gains offset a 4% fall in imports from Indonesia, to 46,300 MT, and 32% fall from Malaysia, to 19,700.

EU imports of tropical hardwood plywood during 2019 are being strongly influenced by market issues elsewhere in the world, notably the US-China trade dispute which has led to a dramatic decline in Chinese tropical hardwood plywood exports to the United States and increasing diversion of Chinese product to the EU, mainly destined for the UK.

In the first half of 2019, UK imports of tropical hardwood plywood products increased 17% to 95,400 MT, despite widespread reports of overstocking and declining plywood consumption in the country. UK imports of tropical hardwood plywood from China increased 81% to 55,000 MT in the first six months of 2019, while UK imports from Malaysia fell 32%, to 16,800 MT, and were down 14% from Indonesia to 17,800 MT.

Tropical hardwood plywood imports into other EU countries were less volatile in the first half of 2019. Moderate declines in imports in Belgium (-8% to 19,100 MT), Germany (-3% to 13,000 MT), France (-3% to 10,100 MT) and Italy (-2% to 8,800 MT) were offset by an 8% rise in imports in the Netherlands, to 18,500 MT.
