news-plywood german plywood industry

After five years of strong growth, sales in the German wood industry (incl plywood industry) fell by 1.2% last year. The sales of companies with 50 or more employees totaled € 36.1 billion in 2019.

While the number of employees increased by 0.9% to 156,995, the number of companies decreased by 0.5% to 929. With a minus of 1%, the domestic market developed better than the foreign market (-1.4%). Driven by the still robust construction industry, the construction-related area of the wood industry – which includes the manufacturers of prefabricated houses, windows, doors, stairs and other wood-based components (plywood, floorboard) – recorded the most significant increase of 3.7% last year.

“Even if the timber industry had to cope with a slight decline in sales for the first time in five years, we are overall satisfied with the annual result. The current sales development is primarily due to the negative price effect for wood and wood products. For the current year, we expect a price-adjusted stable development, ”said the managing director of the Federation of the German Wood Industry (HDH), Dr. Denny careless.
